Recently The Federation of American Scientists declared that video games could redefine education. The group called for federal research into how video games can be converted into serious learning tools for schools. This is precisely what we’re doing at Morphonix!
Since 1993, we have been developing a series of brain games, with research grants from the Small Business Innovation Research program at the National Institute of Mental Health. Our games will help motivate a generation of kids who are growing up with video games. We need a generation of independent, creative thinkers who understand how the brain works and use their brain to learn about the brain.
Morphonix games make complex concepts of brain science comprehensible to children and teens…. and they’re cool enough to play at home and smart enough to play at school. Our research consistently shows that video games have the potential to interest and teach children in the classroom. Children were more interested in their activities, were more interested in learning about the brain, and understood more information about the brain following a video game experience than a traditional lecture. Boys and girls benefited equally from the video game experience.
In addition, there were real knowledge gains from exposure to information about the function and anatomy of the brain. The subjects of the studies self-reported learning about the brain from numerous sources and had extensive experience with video games, As a learning modality, our research shows that video games promise to be an effective tool for teaching. |
